Lawmakers: Take Boating Safety Course Before Going on the Water

With the summer upon us and the boating season getting into full swing, an area lawmaker is reminding boaters to make sure they are fully educated before hitting the water. 50 people attended a special boating safety course over the weekend. The event was held in honor of 26 year-old Bryan Johnson of Ossining, who died in a boating accident 6 years ago. The America’s Boating Club of Westchester has established five scholarships in Johnson’s memory to be given out starting next year. They’ll cover the cost of the course. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were nearly 4,300 recreational boating accidents in 2017, but the numbers of accidents and deaths on the water have decreased since 2016.
