Rockland Legislator: NY’s New Gun Law Could have Been Tougher

The gun measure passed last week with the 2019 New York State Budget that targets domestic abusers didn’t go far enough for almost anyone’s liking. Senate Republicans wanted state aid for school-resources officers, while Assembly Democrats wanted tougher laws. The new law will require the courts to notify the state of any convicted domestic abusers. The state will report them to the FBI and prohibit them from purchasing and possessing a firearm. Law enforcement will be able to take away “firearms, rifles and shotguns” from someone convicted of a felony or serious offense.
