Stewart Airport Gets New Name

An Orange County airport has a new name but it’s not likely to generate the passionate response that accompanied the new Tappan Zee Bridge’s new name. Stewart International Airport will now be called “New York Stewart International Airport” as part of a $37 million modernization project being undertaken by the Port Authority. The addition of international air service by Norwegian Airlines prompted the additional expansion project at the New Windsor airport. The new name, while not all that different from the original name, marks a compromise after the daughter of the airport’s namesake, Archie Stewart, nixed the first suggested new name, “New York International at Stewart Field.” In the 1930’s, Stewart, an early aviation enthusiast, convinced his dairy farmer uncle to donate the land for use as an airport.
