Rockland Sheriff: Public Safety is Paramount During High-Speed Chases

A police chase turned deadly in New Jersey Tuesday when a suspect’s SUV that cops were chasing reportedly jumped a curb and struck and killed a pedestrian in Jersey City. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the incident, but here in Rockland, Sheriff Lou Falco says, they have a a tool called a “Speed Stick” that could be positioned in the street to slow a speeding suspect’s car down. Falco says the speed sticks have only been used once in the last eight years. Falco says chases are often also called off, not only if there is perceived danger to the public, but once a car’s license plate is secured.
