Lawsuit Challenges East Ramapo Central School District Voting Process

The New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit yesterday challenging the East Ramapo Central School District’s at-large method of electing members of the Board of Education. The group claims the system unlawfully denies black and Latino residents an equal opportunity to elect candidates of their choice. According to the NYCLU, more than 99 percent of East Ramapo’s 27,000 private school students are white, while 96 percent of the nearly 8,500 public school students are children of color. They claim cuts are responsible for the decline in school quality in the district. In 2016, they say, Spring Valley and Ramapo High Schools had the lowest graduation rates and highest dropout rates of all public high schools in Rockland County.
