New TZB Tolls Projected to be Over $10 in 2020

A report released last week by a nonpartisan, nonprofit civic organization projects tolls on the new Tappan Zee Bridge in 2020 could climb as high $11.19 for non-commuters without EZ-Pass, $10.61 for non-commuters with EZ-Pass and $7.45 for commuters using EZ-Pass. The governor has promised to leave current tolls as is until then, though the report says a raise in rates is inevitable to help pay back loans on construction costs. The report from The Citizens Budget Commission has been criticized by county executive Ed Day, who said high tolls would be an obstacle to attracting tourists to Rockland County, resulting in wide-ranging negative economic impact. Day has suggested combining the Thruway and Bridge authorities into a shared service and use the savings to pay for the new bridge. The CBC says the projected tolls still compare favorably to those at the nearest alternative crossing, the George Washington Bridge. The report claims studies show the increased tolls would not decrease usage of the Tappan Zee bridge significantly. Click here for the full report.
