Kitchen Fire Displaces 20 in Spring Valley

Spring Valley and Hillcrest firefighters battled a fire Tuesday afternoon at a two-story home on South Madison Avenue. The fire started in the kitchen around noon, forcing the shutdown of the street while firefighters battled the blaze and displace 20 people. Though the fire was quickly extinguished, the kitchen was destroyed and the entire house has been deemed uninhabitable. Spring Valley Chief Raymond Canario says the house had been illegally divided with some hallways blocked by walls. Douglas Perry of the Spring Valley Buildings Department said there were multiple violations in the building. Fire officials and the County Sheriff’s Arson Unit said the fire appeared to be accidental. It’s the second kitchen fire this month in the village. No word on any injuries.
