September 11th Commemoration Events Throughout Rockland

There are a number of September 11th memorials being held today throughout our area. The county’s ceremony will begin at 8:30 this morning at Haverstraw Bay County Park featuring local officials, family members, clergy and others observing the 16th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Family members will read the names of the Rockland County victims. U.S. Marine Corps veteran Megan Leavey will also participate in the ceremony. There will be a “tolling of the bell” followed by a moment of silent prayer at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the World Trade Center’s North Tower, and again at 9:03 a.m., in memory of the attack on the South Tower. Four more bells will toll in remembrance of the attack on the Pentagon, the collapse of the South Tower, the crash of Flight 93 into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the collapse of the North Tower. Over in the town of Ramapo, a ceremony will be held at 7pm before the town board workshop meeting.
