Rockland Group Sues Mahwah over Eruv Ordinance

A Rockland County group reportedly on Friday filed a federal lawsuit against the township of Mahwah, claiming an “openly anti-Semitic campaign” violates its civil rights to construct an eruv. The lawsuit comes on the heels of a township order to its zoning department to start issuing summonses for violations of a new ordinance. The group believes the ordinance is unconstitutional. The suit reportedly cites the existence of eruvs in other communities, including Englewood, Fort Lee, Paramus, Rockland, Westchester and New York City. Meanwhile, Mahwah Police told the DailyVoice that vandals that damaged a half-dozen eruvs over the weekend will be charged under state hate crime statutes. They’re asking anyone who has information to contact them at (201) 529-1000 ext. 220 or tips@mahwahpd.org.
