Tax Issues Concern Local Officials

The New York State office of Real Property Tax Services, whose job is to ensure the proper allocation of State Aid to Education funds, annually goes through what’s called an “equalization” process. The process compares locally assessed values to the ups and downs in the real estate market. For residents of Orangetown, that could mean a double-digit increase in Nanuet and Nyack school district taxes, because property values there have gone up. Hoehmann said Clarkstown is the only town in Rockland County to get that done. On yesterday’s Show, Orangetown deputy supervisor Allan Ryff said the process isn’t fair, since neighbors in the same town in similar houses but different school districts could see dramatic differences in their tax bills…
