Published reports said Officer Familia was in her RV-style police command post at East 183rd Street and Morris Avenue when she was approached by 34 year-old Alexander Bonds, who fired his 38 caliber revolver through the window and shot her in the head, killing her. He was encountered by another police unit not far away and killed in a shootout with the police.
