Lawmakers Head to Trenton to Hammer out NJ Budget

New Jersey lawmakers are expected to head to Trenton today for a special session of the state Legislature as the state government shutdown continues. Governor Chris Christie and the Democratic leader in the state Assembly, Vincent Prieto, are divided over a bill concerning control of the state’s largest health insurer, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, a non-profit that operates under special state laws. Due to the impasse, residents and tourists alike were greeted with “closed” signs at New Jersey beaches and parks, including the New Jersey State Botanical Garden in Ringwood. Meanwhile, the governor is defending his use of a state governor’s residence at Island Beach state park just hours after closing it to the public.
