Bergen County Sheriff: Layoffs Could Have Been Avoided

Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino says layoffs could have been avoided had the union allowed its membership to vote on pay cuts instead. That’s according to DailyVoice.com, which reported that Bergen County’s freeholder board two years ago approved folding what had been the county police department into the sheriff’s office to save county taxpayers up to $200 million over 25 years. Twenty-six law enforcement officers were laid off and 11 others were demoted Monday.
