Equalization Tax Process Targets Orangetown

(Audio) The New York State office of Real Property Tax Services, which is charged with insuring the proper allocation of State Aid to Education funds, annually goes through what’s an “equalization” process. The process measures the relationship of locally assessed values to the fluctuating real estate market. For the town of Orangetown, that could mean an increase in school taxes because property values have gone up. On the Morning Show yesterday supervisor Andy Stewart said the numbers from town to town don’t add up, and could result in taxes unexpectedly going up for Orangetown residents but not for those in neighboring towns that happen to be in the same school districts…

Stewart has been appealing to state officials for a review, and says a final decision could come in August.
