Suez Drops Fence Project in Clarkstown

There will be no border fence…around Lake Deforest, at least not the one Suez New York intended. The company wanted to put up the fence along Strawtown Road in Clarkstown to address concerns about security, littering and trespassing. The barbed wire-topped fence was to eventually ring the entire 4 miles around the reservoir, but residents of the area didn’t want it. Local officials are working with the company to come up with alternative ideas to comply with a confidential assessment by the Department of Homeland Security and balance the concerns of the neighbors and area wildlife. In a press statement, Suez said a pilot program will feature increased fines and police patrols and establish a telephone hotline for residents to report suspicious incidents.
