A new bill has been proposed in Albany that would change the legal age of marriage in New York from 14 to 17 years old. The bill would prohibit marriage under the age of 17 and would require 17 and 18 year olds seeking marriage to receive court approval. Advocates of the proposal say the current age standards are out of date and put children in harm’s way. If the measure is approved, it will go to Governor Andrew Cuomo for his signature.
