Engineer Who Fell Asleep Killing 4 Sues MTA $10M

William Rockefeller, the Metro-North engineer who fell asleep at the controls on the morning of December 1, 2013 causing a derailment that killed four people and injuring approximately 60 more is not only receiving $3,200 in disability pension and a federal pension but he is also suing the MTA for $10 million, arguing that the agency should have had an automatic braking system built into the train that would have slowed it down when it passed the speed limit. Due to the accident the MTA has installed protections at the Spuyten Duyvil curve where the train derailed. The speed limit is 30 mph – Rockefellar took the turn at 80 mph. (Source: The Patch)
