Fire in Haverstraw, Three Injured

According to The Journal News three people were injured when a fire ripped though a village apartment shortly after midnight Monday. The blaze broke out in a second-floor apartment at 1 Broad Street at 12:!0 a.m. according to Haverstraw Fire Chief Robert Drexler. A spokesperson for the Red Cross said that more than 36 residents – including 8 families with 26 adults and 10 children – were displaced from the building. The building has second- and third- floor apartments that sit above three stores on the ground level at the corner of Broad Street and Broadway. The fire started in an apartment and took about 20-25 minutes for firefighters to get the blaze under control. The fire was contained to one apartment, while a few other units and the three stores below had water or smoke damage. Three people were hospitalized with smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was not immediately known as Rockland County’s arson investigation team responded. Chief Drexler confirmed that firefighters from West Haverstraw, Stony Point and Thiells responded, while Congers Firefighters where on standby.
