Human Rights Jennings Not Appointed

Rockland County Executive Ed Day’s nominee for Human Rights Commissioner, Penny Jennings, failed to receive the legislative votes to earn the position. On Tuesday legislators voted 9-7 against Jennings appointment. According to Legislature Chairman Alden Wolfe there will not be a revote. Legislator Toney Earl, told the Journal News he voted against the confirmation because Jennings had not reached out to the county’s two NAACP chapters. He said, “The NAACP is one of the largest human rights groups in the county and nation. If you’re not communicating with them, then it’s very difficult to approve her.” Day said Jennings had uncovered questionable practices and possible corruption in the county’s Community Grant program. “This is politics pure and simple” Day added, “At the same time we’re looking at wrongdoing and possible corruption, they choose to turn away an acting commissioner.” (Source
