Bill to Study Highway-Rail Crossings

Saturday’s train derailment of the LIRR that injured 33 people, 4 seriously has led Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) and Westchester Assemblyman Tom Abinanti and several others to get behind a bill that would allow a study of all highway-rail crossings and to do determine the effectiveness of traffic warning signals for pedestrians. The bill has already passed in the Senate and the Assembly. Governor Cuomo has only to sign it into action. At a rally on Friday Carlucci stated, “There is a dire need to improve the rail infrastructure in our state, as the incident in Hoboken and last year’s fatal accident in Valhalla prove,” he added, “We need to seriously examine why the number of crossing accidents has increased in New York, and what we can do to fix them as soon as possible – lives depend on it.”
