On Friday, the New Jersey legislature approved the .23 cent gas tax hike to replenish the depleted New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund. The Senate voted 24-14 and then the Assembly voted 44-27. Clearing the way for Governor Chris Christie to sign the bill into law. Before the bill could get to a vote Christie agreed with lawmakers to a deal that includes elimination of estate tax, a lowering of the sales tax, and an increase in benefits for the working poor and veterans. Once Christie signs the bills, gas prices are expected to rise in 15 days or on November 1 whichever is later. Halted road projects are expected to resume soon after.
