Afternoon News Update 9/27

This morning, a woman in Mount Vernon was sentenced to 25 years in prison for reportedly running over and killing another woman who was dating her ex-boyfriend. 36-year-old Carla Scott was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and leaving the scene back in April of 2015. Glynis Pinto, the woman who was hit by Scott, was immediately taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. (Source: LoHud)

Early this morning, an FDNY fire battalion chief was killed in a gas explosion that injured at least six others. Chief Michael Fahy and 106 other firefighters were called to the scene of the explosion in the Bronx. The other six responders who were injured were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Authorities are now investigating the possibility that the explosion was caused by drug lab. Earlier today, a tractor trailer traveling northbound on the Hutchinson River Parkway crashed into an overpass and became lodged between the road and the bridge. The crash, which no one was injured in, caused a tremendous amount of traffic on the northbound side of the parkway and slowed traffic on the southbound side. The truck was dislodged at around 9:20 a.m. and the area has since been cleared. (Source: LoHud)

In Major League Baseball news, The New York Mets lost 7-3 last night as the Mets played the Marlins in their first game back after the passing of Jose Fernandez. The New York Yankees kept their slim playoff hopes alive last night with a 7-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets and Yankees are both scheduled to play at 7:00 pm tonight.
