Afternoon News update 9/21

A Ramapo high school student was charged with multiple felony counts after he pulled a handgun on a fellow student on a school bus. The 16-year-old student, whose name was not released, was involved in an argument with a younger student that he was sitting next to. Police were notified by the younger child’s parents of the student’s gun and proceeded to track down the 16-year-old. He is being held in lieu of 20,000 dollars bail. (Source: LoHud)

On Saturday, a Bronx man was driving while intoxicated when he crashed his friend’s car and fled the scene in Dutchess County. 25-year old Anthony Velazquez was in the car when his friend pulled over to help one of their other friends who felt ill. Velazquez then drove away, leaving his friends behind and eventually crashing the car in Wappinger. He is due back in court on Thursday and is currently being held at the Westchester County jail. The city of Hackensack plans to deny all bids from companies that wish to privatize sanitation services. The original plan for implementing private sanitation services came about as a cost cutting measure; however, after much consideration and research, it was discovered that the savings would be minimal for the city. City officials also received harsh criticism from community members who saw the move as a threat to those already employed by the city’s sanitation division. (Source: NorthJersey)

The Major League Baseball playoff push continued last night. The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves last night 5-4, after a late inning comeback fell short. The New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Mets and Yankees are both scheduled to play at 7:10 tonight.
