Clearwater Sloop Stalls on Hudson

Early yesterday evening at approximately 5:10 p.m. 50 people aboard the Clearwater sloop, 30 of the passengers children from Irvington Schools, enjoyed a little more time on the Hudson than they planned for – when the boat suffered a mechanical failure and a distress call went out to Westchester County and New Jersey police rescue boats. No one was injured when the sloop stalled about a quarter-mile south of Yonkers. All passengers were evacuated. The Clearwater Sloop, first launched in 1969 by folk singer Pete Seeger, had just been re-launched after an $850,000 restoration and is considered the flagship of the Hudson River environmental group Clearwater.
