School is Open Watch for Children

County Executive Ed Day would like to remind everyone that school is open and its time to be more aware of pedestrians and to watch for children. Remember, you must stop for a school bus and wait until the bus’ red light is off before driving ahead. A ticket for breaking this law is a five-point penalty and a stiff fine. The Health Department started a program over the summer See! BeSeen! Focusing on traffic safety especially on Route 59 and Route 45 in the Ramapo area that have been identified as having over 1,100 crashes from 2012 to 2015 and nine pedestrians killed in Rockland Between 2011 and 2013. Day asks pedestrians to stay in marked crosswalks, wear visible clothing at night, and pay attention by not texting while crossing. Drivers are reminded to obey the speed limit, stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and intersections, and no texting while driving, expect pedestrians. Share the roads and be careful.
