Afternoon News Update (8/24)

A three alarm fire broke out in a Yonkers apartment building last night, resulting in the rescue of six residents. Authorities say the fire appears to have been started when a resident fell asleep with a burning cigarette. The fire started around 1:45 a.m. and raged for an hour before 60 firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control. (LoHud)

A tractor-trailer overturned on the New Jersey turnpike this morning, causing northbound express lanes to close. The truck overturned and caught fire near exit 70 at around 4:30 a.m. this morning. Authorities say the driver suffered minor injuries. (NorthJerseyNews)

On Friday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that will allow industrial hemp to be sold to manufactures. The bill was signed into law in the hopes that growing hemp will benefit local agriculture and boost the state’s economy. Hemp can be used for a variety of commercial products such as paper, clothing, and food. (Lohud)

The Rockland Boulders beat the Ottawa Champions 5-1 last night. Richard Salazar earned the win for Rockland, while Borkowski took the loss for Ottawa. The Boulders look to take another one against the Champions tonight at RCGT Park in Ottawa; game time is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
