Volunteer Firefighters Deliver Baby in Spring Valley

Yesterday morning at approximately 10:00 a.m. Fire Chief Ken Sohlman and other volunteers were busy cleaning up a gasoline spill from a car near 1 Union Road in Spring Valley when a taxi pulled up and the driver told them the woman in the back was in labor. Sohlman, Lt. Jason Dennison, and fire truck driver Eric Mann helped the woman out of the car and onto the ground. Sohlman told Journal News, “When we got her on the ground, the baby’s head already was appearing,” he added, “She pushed the baby out.” Spring Hill Ambulance and Rockland Paramedics Services transported mother and child to Nyack Hospital. This was the first birthing for the volunteer fire fighters. Sohlman said, “This is a great feeling for us,” he added, “especially after all the bad stuff we deal with.” And in case you are wondering – it’s a boy!
