At approximately 5:30 pm last night a fire broke out on the second floor of a multi-family home at 20 Claremont Avenue in Mount Vernon. Damage was severe with a collapsed roof and exterior siding melting. Mayor Richard Thomas said five people were taken to the hospital — three suffered smoke inhalation the other two have injuries that are unknown at this time. American Red Cross set up in a neighbor’s home to supply support to four displaced families. Cause of the blaze is under investigation.
