Crane Crashes on Tappan Zee Bridge

At noon yesterday there was a crane accident on the “existing” Tappan Zee Bridge shutting down traffic for more than five hours. It was one of 28 cranes doing routine work. There was a malfunction and the crane bottom collapsed across both sides of the Bridge. Governor Cuomo stated, “The boom collapsed and the damage is significant, the crane is mangled.” There were three injuries listed in minor condition. The Governor said, “it was nothing short of a miracle” that there weren’t more injuries and damage. As of this morning, the Thruway Authority, at Governor Cuomo’s direction, has opened six out of seven lanes. Three lanes will be open in each direction until further notice. Motorists should plan for delays during morning and evening commutes. For more updates motorists are advised to follow @ThruwayTraffic on Twitter.
