Afternoon News Update

On Thursday, White Plains’ Firefighters put out a fire at the Mamaroneck Avenue Garden Center. The blaze, which briefly closed down Mamaroneck Avenue, was quickly put out upon the arrival of the firefighters. Nobody was harmed in the incident.

In Thornwood, police arrested a 33 year-old Queens man who lied to authorities about being robbed at gunpoint. Christopher Mercado told police he was robbed on Marble Avenue on his way to work. Police then arrested a 19 year old Bronx man, who matched Mercado’s description. After police realized Mercado’s story didn’t add up, they released the 19 year old Bronx man and charged Mercado with third degree falsely reporting an incident, which is a misdemeanor.

The East Ramapo school district has sworn in a new superintendent. Deborah Wortham, who has been interim superintendent since the fall, was officially sworn in on Thursday at a school board meeting. Wortham will work under a three year contract that’s worth 250 thousand dollars annually.

The Rockland Boulders won in walk-off fashion last night as they beat the New Jersey Jackals 9-8 in the bottom of the 10th inning. Hector Nelo earned the win for Rockland while Robert Stock took the loss for New Jersey. Tonight the Boulders will play the Ottawa Champions at RCGT Park, game time is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
