Sain Building Open to Bidders

The Sain Building at 18 New Hempstead Road in New City finally made it onto the agenda at Tuesday’s meeting of the Legislature and a 15-0 bipartisan vote was taken as to what the next step would be in terms of its sale. The Legislature has put out a request for bids from all parties interested in purchasing the county-owned building despite a recent offer of $4.51M that was more than $500K above the asking price. Legislature Chairman Alden H. Wolfe said, “by following the legal process, we will be able to obtain the information necessary for us to make an educated and responsible decision in the best interests of the taxpayers of Rockland County.” Legislator Ilan Schoenberger said “The purpose is to provide an equal playing field to all potential buyers and to get the highest sale price for the benefit of taxpayers. The sealed bidding process will allow county government to provide that equal opportunity.” Rockland County Executive Ed Day, who has been working on the sale since last October, says the decision is putting the deal back to square one and that the sale likely will not be completed by the end of the year. In response, Day said, “We will not go back to the bad old days of allowing the Legislature to run up budget deficits.” He added, “We now have no choice but to implement austerity measures for the remainder of the year in order to fill the hole in this budget created by the Legislature.” Vice Chairman of the Legislature, Jay Hood, Jr. said this morning on WRCR that he was confident it would all work out in the end.
