It’s hot, humid and hazy and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert is urging residents to take some steps to stay cool and prevent heat-related illness. Never leave children, pets or those with special needs in a parked car — temperatures can rise in minutes. If you don’t have an A/C go to a cooling center. You can find one by calling your local village hall or visit: (rocklandgov.com/health). Drink fluids – avoiding alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks. Avoid strenuous activity between 11am-4 pm – if you must be outside add a few more breaks. Also, be aware that some medications affect the body’s ability to sweat and stay cool – so check with your doctor. And finally, be a good neighbor and check on the elderly in your community and be sure they are cool, hydrated and safe.
