Torne Brook Transformer Fire Ends

The transformer blaze that began Friday evening in Hillburn, and has kept firefighters working for three days, is officially out. There were environmental concerns about the 500,000-volt Orange and Rockland substation because it carries 60,000 gallons of oil that sits 150 feet away from the Torne Brook that feeds into the Ramapo River where wells provide drinking water to millions of people in Rockland and parts of New Jersey. Rockland Fire Emergency Services Coordinator Gordon Wren said the transformer oil did not enter the river or underground water system.
