Unit 2 Reactor Shut Down Again for Leak

There has been another mishap at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchannan. At the beginning of the month, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave Indian Point nuclear power plant a “passing grade” on its annual safety assessment despite push back from politicians and activists who want the plant closed. Unit 2, was taken offline in March when approximately 278 damaged bolts were discovered. After getting the go ahead, Indian Point’s Entergy put Unit 2 back into service this month. On Thursday, Unit 2 was once again shut down when a leaking pipe was discovered. Entergy says the leak was in a “non-radioactive system” and it would not affect safety. They added, “the plant needs to be shut down for weld repairs to be completed, in accordance with NRC regulations.”
