Sunk Tug Specialist Captain Not on Ship that Morning

The Journal News is reporting this morning that police are investigating a claim as to whether the actual captain of the tugboat Specialist, that sunk into the Hudson after colliding with a Tappan Zee Bridge construction barge and killing three, was not on his boat that morning but was on another boat, Realist, covering for a captain who was below quarters, possibly with a woman. There were three boats that morning, moving a construction crane down the Hudson to New Jersey – Specialist, Realist and Trevor. Early on the morning of March 12 Specialist collided with the construction barge and sank quickly killing Paul Amon, Timothy Conklin, and Harry Hernandez. The Captain of Specialist Paul Crowley had left Paul Amon, “mate in charge” on Specialist while he relieved Captain James Morrison of the barge Realist. There was heavy fog on the Hudson the morning of the accident and there are concerns crew fatigue was a factor. They are also investigating a misconfiguration of the construction barge that may have caused the unusually rapid sinking of the tug. Investigations into civil and criminal charges are still ongoing. Family members of the victims have filed multi-million dollar federal lawsuits against all those involved.
