NRC Annual Indian Point Assessment Tonight

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s “Annual Indian Point Assessment” meeting is this evening in Tarrytown. There will be a press conference an hour before the meeting with advocates of closing Indian Point. They will be presenting new, previously unreported information about the nuclear plant. Experts will explain the unprecedented damage and deterioration recently discovered inside the IP-2 reactor, and why restarting it, as the plant owner Entergy intends to do this month, poses a significant danger to the public. They will also supply information about Entergy’s efforts to get ratepayers to underwrite the costs of Indian Points continued operation. The former head of the New York Power Authority, David Freeman and the International Friends of the Earth will discuss their petition recently filed with the NRC to block the restart of IP-2 , and demand that the IP-3 reactor also be powered down and investigated for similar damage. Rockland County Legislature Chairman, Alden H. Wolfe and Rockland County Legislator, Harriet Cornell, Paul Gallay, President of RiverKeeper, among other officials will be in attendance. The press conference is at 6 p.m. at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel Tarrytown (455 S Broadway – Plaza 1-4 meeting room). For more information visit: Stephen ken, skent@kent.com or 914-589-5988.
