Yonkers City Council Votes Wednesday on Transfer Tax Hike

On Wednesday, the Yonkers City Council will vote on a $1.1 billion budget that includes a controversial plan to raise a tax on home sellers. Presently, the real estate transfer tax is 1.5 percent of the sale. City of Yonkers Mayor, Mike Spano, is proposing to double the tax to 3 percent. The increase is projected to add an additional $9.8 million in revenue. The tax is assessed on the selling price of a home and has left single-family homeowners and real estate brokers angered by the hike suggesting it will kill home sales. Mayor Spano has proposed a gradual reduction back to the original 1.5 percent over the next six-years.
