SUNY-Cortlandt Swimmer Drowns During Lifeguard Test

22-year-old Jack Jakubek, a recent graduate of the State University of New York-Cortland and a record-setting member of the swim team, drowned on Saturday morning at Pilgrim Lake in Massachusetts during a lifeguard test. Jakubek went missing around 8:49 a.m. and was found 24 minutes later by Fire and Rescue. They transferred the swimmer to a local hospital but could not be revived. The University said he was expected to serve as a graduate-assistant coach next season while pursuing a master’s degree. Brian Tobin, head coach at SUNY Cortland stated, “Jack was an outstanding athlete, but he was even more remarkable as a person, “ he added, “his loss is devastating.” State police detectives assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office are investigating the death.
