Mount Vernon Fire Arson Suspected

An investigation is ongoing into a three-alarm fire that gutted two homes at 21 South Terrace Avenue in Mount Vernon a little after 12 a.m. Sunday morning. It took firefighters several hours to get the fire under control as it spread to several nearby buildings. The blaze left six families homeless displacing 25 adults and four children. The victims were taken to the Red Cross shelter at the Mount Vernon Armory. Another property at 23 S. Terrace Avenue was damaged and two other buildings were evacuated but the five families from those buildings were given permission to return to their homes. Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas when asked if he thought the fires were linked to arson stated, “there doesn’t seem to be another cause that would lead us to believe anything else at this point. So, it’s under investigation.”
