White Plains Overhauls Taxi System

An overhaul of the City’s Taxicab Ordinance has been announced. According to Mayor Tom Roach, “This legislation comprehensively updates the City’s Taxicab Ordinance to better meet the needs of our growing city,” Highlights include five new medallions assigned specifically for accessible vehicles only; the creation of a defined “Hail Zone” in the downtown area; replacement of the Zone Map with taximeters in the next three months; all cabs will now be painted white with the White Plains medallion sticker making it easier for passengers and Police to identify cabs; required annual drug testing; and cabs must be taken out of service after 40,000 miles promoting more fuel efficient and lower-emission vehicles entering the fleet. Mayor Roach said, “We focused on the customer experience and have included a broad range of changes that I believe will make for a better overall experience for passengers.”
