Oscar Winner, Patty Duke Dies

NEW YORK CITY — Multiple award-winning actress, Patty Duke, has died. Duke was awarded a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, at the young age of 16, for her portrayal of Helen Keller in the film The Miracle Worker opposite Anne Bancroft. Fans will remember her for the television series The Patty Duke Show, in which she played “identical cousins”. Over the course of her career she received ten Emmy Award nominations and was awarded three; two Golden Globes; and a People’s Choice, award among others. Duke served as President of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985-1988. In 1982, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, leading her to devote much of her later years advocating for and educating the public on mental health. Representatives report she died of sepsis from a ruptured intestine. Her son, Sean Astin, posted on Facebook, “we celebrate the infinite love and compassion she shared through her work and throughout her life.” Patty Duke was 69.
