FDA (IR) Opioid Enhance Warnings

The FDA announced enhanced warnings for opioid pain medications related to risks of misuses, abuse, addiction, overdose and death. It is a continuing effort to educate doctors and patients about related risks. The FDA announced in a press release new requirements for “class-wide safety labeling changes for immediate-release (IR) opioid pain medications.” This most recent announcement is part of a plan to focus on policies aimed at reversing the epidemic, while still providing patients in pain access to effective relief. FDA stated, “Opioid addiction and overdose have reached epidemic levels over the past decade, and the FDA remains steadfast in our commitment to do our part to help reverse the devastating impact of the misuse and abuse of prescription opioids.” The latest update clarifies for doctors and patients that Immediate Release Opioids should be reserved for cases of severe pain.
