Dr. Betty A. Rosa, New Chancellor

Dr. Betty A. Rosa, a former New York City principal and superintendent, was elected Monday as the new chancellor by members of the State Board of Regents. Dr. Rosa was elected by a vote of 15-0, with two abstentions. Born in New York and spending much of her youth in Puerto Rico, her career began in the city’s schools as a bilingual teacher. She became principal of Intermediate School 218 and later a senior superintendent of one of the poorest neighborhoods, District 8 in the Bronx. Dr. Rosa is known for being openly critical of the tests introduced under, past chancellor, Merryl H. Tisch, as part of the Common Core standards transition. For many, Dr. Rosa’s election is seen as a shift in direction by the Board of Regents, after much outrage by parents over the testing standards.
