Cuomo, Eliminate Grade Crossings

ALBANY – Yesterday on Long Island, Gov. Cuomo met with reporters and made a call for action in eliminating grade crossings on commuter rail lines. Grade crossings are at street level where the roadway and the rail line intersect. Cuomo would like to see officials eliminate the “dangerous” crossings before another deadly accident occurs. The state presently has over 5,000 such rail crossings and last year a bill was sponsored by Assemblyman Tom Abinanti, a Democrat from Mount Pleasant to have the Department of Transportation begin a safety study to improve the issue. Cuomo is open to hearing concerns at the community level and designing solutions that will work for local officials.
