Orange County Officials Respond To School Bomb Threats

OFFICIALS IN ORANGE COUNTY ARE CALLING FOR NEW SECURITY MEASURES IN THE MIDDLETOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT, FOLLOWING MORE THAN A DOZEN BOMB THREATS AT THE MAPLE HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LOCATED THERE. CITY MAYOR JOSEPH DeSTEFANO STATED THAT STUDENTS AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND NEARBY MIDDLE SCHOOL ARE TERRIFIED TO ATTEND CLASS, AFTER THE SCHOOLS WERE FORCED TO LOCK DOWN THIRTEEN TIMES IN THE LAST 9 MONTHS DUE TO ANONYMOUS BOMB THREATS ON THE BUILDINGS. NOW HE AND OTHER CITY OFFICIALS ARE ASKING THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HIRE FOUR SAFETY OFFICERS TO PATROL THE SCHOOLS AND HELP KIDS FEEL SAFER WHILE INVESTIGATIONS HOPEFULLY LEAD TO STOPPING THE THREATS, KNOWN AS SWATTING INCIDENTS. DESTEFANO ALSO STATED HE HOPES THE STATE MAY BE ABLE TO HELP FIND FUNDING FOR THE OFFICERS. SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOL KEVIN EASTWOOD STATED TO NEWS 12 THAT THE IDEA WOULD COST ALMOST 300 THOUSAND DOLLARS, SOMETHING THE DISTRICT SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD AT THIS TIME.
