Federal Officials demand New York State Department of Transpotation Look Into Safety Conditions Surrounding RailRoad Crossings

FEDERAL OFFICIALS ARE URGING THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO LOOK INTO SAFETY CONCERNS SURROUNDING RAILROAD CROSSINGS. THE FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINISTRATION SUBMITTED A LETTER TO THE DOT, ASKING THAT OFFICIALS TAKE INTO ACCOUNT RECENT ACCIDENTS INVOLVING DRIVERS AND TRAINS IN RECENT YEARS, INCLUDING ONE LAST YEAR AT COMMERCE STREET IN VALHALLA, WESTCHESTER COUNTY THAT KILLED SIX PEOPLE AND INJURED FIFTEEN. THE DRIVER, ELLEN BRODY, WAS STOPPED ON THE RAILS WHEN THE CROSSING BAR CAME DOWN, AND HER FAMILY HAS RECENTLY STATED TO INVESTIGATORS THAT THEY BELIEVE SHE DID NOT REALIZE HER SUV WAS ON THE CROSSING BECAUSE OF THE SNOW AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. THE FRA REFERENCED SUCH INCIDENTS, REQUESTING THAT THE DOT MAKE FURTHER CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SAFETY OF DRIVERS AND TRAIN RIDERS AT CROSSINGS SUCH AS THE COMMERCE STREET ONE. THE DOT RESPONDED,STATING THAT THEY CHECK CROSSINGS THROUGHOUT THE STATE AND ARE WILLING TO WORK WITH THE FRA TO CONTINUE STUDYING TRAFFIC PATTERNS AND SAFETY MEASURES THAT CAN BE TAKEN.
