US Senator Schumer Promotes Bill to Fight Drug Abuse

United States Senator Charles Schumer has requested that Congress seriously consider passing a bill proposed by Senator Jeanne Shaheen, that would provide $600 million to fight drug use in the country. Schumer spoke at non-profit Student Assistance Services in Tarrytown on Tuesday, stating that the bill would help combat what he calls the “national emergency” of opiod addiction. The $600 million would be divided between organizations to allow them to participate in another potential legislation, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2015, which would help prevent addiction, make treatment more available to those suffering, and increase programs of education of people incarcerated on drug charges. Schumer stated that the act is lacking funding and so Shaheen’s bill would greatly assist in the fight.
