New VP of System Safety for Metro North Railroad

Metro-North Railroad has hired a new Vice President of system safety to start on January 4. Justin Vonashek, whose previous employers include the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and the Regional Transportation Authority of Chicago will be joining Metro-North President Joseph Giuletti to implement measures including new technology to trains, added maintenance, and testing engineers for sleep apnea. Since the Valhalla train crash from February 2013 was suspected to be caused by engineer error due to the sleep disorder, extra caution will go toward engineer wellbeing. Since the accident, Metro North claims to have replaced nearly 98,000 railroad ties, rebuilt 88 switches, and made improvements at 32 railroad crossings.
