Orange and Rockland Utilities will be cleaning an area near Pat Malon drive in Suffern. According to officials with the company following an inspection by the Department of Environmental Conservation it was determined that the ground at the former gas plant was contaminated with carcinogens. The $11 million-$13 million project will begin shortly and is expected to take up to nine months, and will remove 20,000 yards of soil with high levels of coal tar from that area, which is extremely close to Suffern’s water supply though the DEC stated it has not been affected by the contamination. O&R will be holding a meeting at 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Village Hall in Suffern.
