Ramapo Candidate’s Residence Questioned

According to a report in the Journal News a member of the Zoning Board of appeals in Ramapo who is running for Town Board, may actually be a resident of New Jersey. Samuel Tress stated to the news paper that he splits his time between his Lakewood, New Jersey home and an apartment he rents off Kearsing Parkway in Monsey. Election law requires that a person holding office live in the district they are elected in. Tress is registered to vote at his Monsey address and stated that he spends most of his week there, and is legally required to reside in Ramapo as a member of the Zoning Board. According to the Journal News’ in depth report, Tress was also convicted of a crime in 2004. Court papers state that the man pleaded guilty to mail fraud when he used a false identity to get a mortgage for a home in Spring Valley. Tress stated to reporters that he didn’t quite remember and believed the case had been dismissed, though the court apparently sentenced him to three years probation.
